FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Newcomer Julie Willoughby makes Surprising Splash in LD17 race
Nora Ellen seemed to be a lock to replace her son as State Representative, but support for her may be weaker than expected.
The President of the Chandler Lieutenants and Sergeants Association (CLASA) has publicly decline to support Ellen. Sergeant Tom Lovejoy cites a "lack of follow through, broken promises and poor voting record."
This cycle, Lovejoy is instead supporting newcomer, Julie Willoughby. As a Chandler Police officer, Lovejoy sees Willoughby, an ER trauma nurse, as more supportive of Chandler's first responders.
Willoughby has made public safety a key campaign issue. Her website advocates public education by Chandler Fire to reduce drowning and heat stroke deaths.
Whether this message resonates with residents of Arizona Legislative District 17 is yet to be seen. This race is already more exciting than the sleepy 2016 Primary in which JD Mesnard and Jeff Weninger ran unopposed.
With two State House spots available on August 28th, Ellen and Willoughby could end up as running mates. As Lovejoy's endorsement makes clear, though, for now, Willoughby and Ellen are going head to head.
